Speaker Biographies
Kenneth Clarke CH, QC, MP is a British Conservative politician who has represented Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire as Member of Parliament since 1970.
Michael Emerson is Senior Researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Brussels, since 1998. A graduate of Balliol College, Oxford, he first worked as an economist at OECD, Paris (1966-1973). He moved to the European Commission in 1973, with positions including economic adviser to the President (Roy Jenkins), and EU ambassador to Moscow (1991-1996). He then joined the London School of Economics as Senior Research Fellow (1996-1998). Emerson has published extensively on European policy issues.
Dr Swati Dhingra is Lecturer in Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE.
About the book
This book offers a succinct, objective and comprehensive review of the evidence on the workings of the European Union, the source of which is the British Government’s own impressive research project, Review of the Balance of Competences between the United Kingdom and the European Union. While the Government declined to draw conclusions from its own researches, the authors have taken up the open invitation for others to do so.
Reviews
"Truly essential reading for those wishing to learn the facts about what continued membership of - as well as exit from - the EU would mean for the UK. And UK arguments in many ways are already reforming the EU". Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Sweden.
"An absolutely invaluable resource for anyone concerned with Britain's evolving relationship with the European Union". Anthony Giddens, former Director of the London School of Economics and member of the House of Lords.
"..a non-romantic, no-spin, jargon-free, no-hyperbole guidebook to the Brexit debate, .... for everyone who wants to navigate this fateful question with a cool head and clear vision". Jan Techau, Director, Carnegie Europe.
The LSE European Institute (@LSEEI) was established in 1991 as a dedicated centre for the interdisciplinary study of processes of integration and fragmentation within Europe. In the most recent national Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), the Institute was ranked first for research in its sector. The LSE European Institute has been a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence since 2009.
