BHGS Events and Coronavirus: March 28th Update:

The UK-wide adoption of "social distancing" in response to the Coronavirus outbreak has already led to many wargames events being postponed, including some of those hosted (or co-hosted) by the BHGS. With all of the entries for Roll Call now refunded and with both the LGT and UKGE events resheduled we've been looking at how best to balance our desire to help you all get out and get gaming again as soon as possible against the challenges all of us currently face in terms of making any sort of forward committments while the current - and potentially lengthy - period of 'social distancing' is in effect across the UK.

It's a complex problem, but where we've ended up is with the following (hopefully) clear and simple plan;

The BHGS committment to you is to:

  • offer as many gaming opportunities this year as we possibly can,
  • hold open the posibility of running the events we organise for as long as is sensible…
  • … but also commit to cancel them as early as possible should it become obvious at any stage that any of them are not going to be viable,
  • continue to offer 100% refunds on any events we operate and then cancel,
  • continue to offer 100% refunds on cancellations for any individual wishing to drop out for personal reasons, at any time prior to the event taking place.

What does this mean for Britcon?

  • We're continuing to work on the assumption that Britcon will be able to go ahead on the weekend of 7th-9th August as planned.
  • If the UK is still operating under "social isolation" at the end of June we will look to cancel the event and refund all bookings in full.
  • If so, Britcon will not be rescheduled and the next edition will be held in 2021.
  • As of today, the Uni is unable to confirm whether they'll be able to offer "student style" accommodation this year, however and other sites are offering penalty-free cancellations on all forward bookings right now, so this is probably a better option anyway if you want to completely de-risk your total cost of attendance.

The largest event in the BHGS calendar returns again to UMIST in Manchester over the Friday-Sunday of 7-9th August 2020

This booking form is for booking the Britcon Competitions.

Britcon takes place over 3 days, with the first games starting as players arrive on Friday evening. The Saturday is a "long" day, with gaming from around 8am-8pm, with a more normal day on Sunday.

This year prices are again frozen (for the 9th year in a row) and your entry fee for all of our 3-day events includes the Britcon Fiver where we again hand back £5 to every player in the form of the very popular "£5 off any £10 purchase with any trader" deal.  This year we will also include a Free Food & Drink voucher redeemable at outlets across the venue.

Accomodation is still optional - We've negotiated some great rates at UMIST for a variety of standards of rooms starting at just £36/night Bed & Breakfast - all still in stumbling distance of the venue and bar as usual, but you are totally free to book and stay elsewhere if you wish. If you are prepared to walk 10 minutes we heard of hotels with rates as low as £17/night last year, so look around. If you do want to stay onsite there will be a booking portal to book the University rooms available online soon

(and here's the technical small print stuff)

In the event that there are insufficient players to make your chosen period viable (normally fewer than 6 players), you will be offered the option to switch to another period or a full refund.

Entry to the competition is regarded as acceptance of the BHGS’s competition rules (available on the BHGS website). Admission to any BHGS tournament is at the sole discretion of the organisers and their decision on all matters is final. If any entrant breaches these rules, causes disruption during the competition or causes or threatens to cause damage to property at the venue the BHGS’s representative on the day will be entitled in his or her absolute discretion to require that player to leave the competition and the venue immediately, without any refund. If you enter a tournament it may be neccesary for the umpire or list checker to contact you to facilitate your entry. In such cases we may supply details including your email address to them for this express purpose only.

Late submission of army lists is your best and most effective way to make the lives of the many kind, selfless and generous people who organise these events for you a real misery. Please therefore try to submit your list in good time. Deadline dates and list checkers will be published on the BHGS website and communicated to players. The BHGS reserve the right to inflict any one of a wide range of as yet unspecified grave, horrible, humiliating and potentially personally painful penalties on anyone who submits a late list. Especially if you are a repeat offender. You know who you are.... so be careful !

GDPR : By entering the event you are consenting for The BHGS to contact you via emails (sent by us via the Eventbrite booking system) to help us fulfil your order for this specific event, and to share your name and contact details with your period umpire and list checker who act as the BHGS in helping to fulfil your order. After the event we will send you an email allowing you to "opt-in" or "opt-out" of our email list, from which we send a few emails each year informing you about upcoming gaming events. Information you provide when booking (i.e. which ruleset you enter, your club and your postcode) is included as part of the data we hold on you to help us plan our events and fulfil your orders. If you are on our general BHGS mailing list you can unsubscribe or update your info at any time via our website at or by the link in the footer of any of our emails sent out via the Mailchimp system.. We don't share your information with anyone else, ever.

The British Historical Gaming Society

The British Historical Games Society was created in 1996 to act as a body to further the advancement of the historical wargaming hobby. The BHGS runs several national competitions, assists with organising many others and has international links with other national and international wargaming organisations.

We are here to serve the tournament wargaming community as a whole. We are a ruleset agnostic, non-profit organisation and any surpluses made from our activities are ploughed back into facilitating and encouraging tournament wargaming wherever and whenever we can.

We organise the Challenge, Roll Call, Britcon and the BHGS Doubles each year and support a number of other events. For more details visit our website at
