Do people often fail to understand you even though your grammar is correct? Do you wish to learn to speak English with a more native-like accent that is easy for people to understand? Perhaps you can write grammatically correct sentences, but when it comes to conversation you have difficulty communicating due to poor pronunciation and intonation?

The aim of this workshop is to give students the necessary tools and knowledge to help them improve their English pronunciation and listening skills. Students will be introduced to the phonemes of English and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Following this, we will compare and practice the pronunciation of vowels, consonants, and basic sentence structures.

Session 01: The basic sounds and tools, Saturday 25th Feb

We’ll start with the tools to help us achieve natural British English pronunciation: the monophthong chart and the International Phonetic Alphabet.

These tools will help us accurately identify the target sounds of British English Pronunciation. We’ll also take a look at the physical aspects. How do we shape the mouth, round the lips, and position the tongue so that we can replicate the sounds just like a native English speaker?

Session 02: Natural rhythm, Saturday 4th March

During the second session, we’ll study the principles of connected speech and syllable stress. Connected speech helps us transition from one sound to another with ease and fluidity. We will take a look at the characteristics that help us achieve this: glottal stops, semi-vowels, and weaker forms.

Session 03: Applying what we have learned, Saturday 11th March

Each participant will read out a script prepared in advance and given feedback to work on. The script should be no more than 200 words and include vocabulary and expressions that they use regularly.

Each workshop is 90 minutes long and the number of participants will be limited to six people.

After each workshop, participants are welcome to join me at a nearby coffee shop where we will discuss our progress in an informal setting. Enrollment in online course materials is required to attend this course (purchased separately).

Who can attend this event?

The main target audience is non-native English speakers of all levels. However, anyone is welcome to attend.

Handouts will be given but please bring a notepad and pen if you wish to take notes.

Yes, during this workshop we will study the concepts of British English pronunciation in much greater depth with the added benefit of limiting the number of participants to a maximum of six people.
