British Education in Spain

The Instituto Cervantes Leeds, in collaboration with The University of Leeds, presents "British Education in Spain", with the participation of Sir Roger Fry CBE and Adrián Massam, as part of the series "Hispanglia: the traces of Spain in the UK" coordinated by Professor Duncan Wheeler (University of Leeds)

Sir Roger Fry's CBE career has centred on promoting British education overseas. He has founded 10 British international schools and has led two international associations of British schools overseas. In this capacity, he negotiated with the Department for Education the establishment of an official inspection scheme for British schools abroad. He was a director of the UK's Independent Schools Council and is the Founder and Patron of a multi-academy trust in England.

He has been a member of the British Council's education advisory board. He is chair of the Trustees of the British Hispanic Foundation and an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College of Oxford. He has been awarded the Order of Mérito Civil and the Order of Alfonso X El Sabio in Spain and in the UK the Order of the British Empire and a Knighthood.

Adrian Massam has been leading and developing British schools in Spain for just over 30 years. He graduated from Cambridge University and entered the teaching profession in 1983, moving to Spain in 1987. He has been a member of the executive committee of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) since 2003, and President of the association since 2015.

In this capacity, he has helped to consolidate the recognition of British school qualifications in Spain, advising on equivalences and supporting the work that led up to the signing of the UK-Spain bilateral agreement on education. He has also contributed to the development of the NABSS inspection service for British schools in Spain and has been inspecting schools since 2002.

El Instituto Cervantes Leeds y la Universidad de Leeds presentan «Educación británica en España», con la participación de Sir Roger Fry CBE y Adrián Massam, como parte del programa se presenta una nueva sesión de «Hispanglia: las huellas de España en el Reino Unido» que coordina el catedrático Duncan Wheeler (Universidad de Leeds).

Sir Roger Fry CBE se ha centrado en promover la educación británica en el extranjero. Ha fundado 10 colegios internacionales británicos y ha dirigido dos asociaciones internacionales de colegios británicos en el extranjero. Como tal, negoció con el Ministerio de Educación el establecimiento de un sistema oficial de inspección de los colegios británicos en el extranjero.

Fue director del Consejo de Colegios Independientes del Reino Unido y es fundador y patrono de una fundación multiacadémica en Inglaterra. Ha sido miembro del consejo asesor de educación del British Council. Es Presidente del Patronato de la Fundación Hispano Británica y Miembro Honorario del Trinity College de Oxford.

Ha sido condecorado con la Orden del Mérito Civil y la Orden de Alfonso X El Sabio en España, y en el Reino Unido con la Orden del Imperio Británico y el título de Caballero.

Adrián Massam lleva más de 30 años dirigiendo y desarrollando colegios británicos en España. Se licenció en la Universidad de Cambridge y empezó a ejercer la docencia en 1983, trasladándose a España en 1987. Adrián ha sido miembro del comité ejecutivo de la Asociación Nacional de Colegios Británicos en España (NABSS) desde 2003, y Presidente de la asociación desde 2015.

En este cargo ha contribuido a consolidar el reconocimiento de los títulos escolares británicos en España, asesorando sobre equivalencias y apoyando los trabajos que condujeron a la firma del acuerdo bilateral Reino Unido - España en materia de educación. También ha contribuido al desarrollo del servicio de inspección NABSS para colegios británicos en España y lleva inspeccionando colegios desde 2002.
