Event description

Description

We are delighted to announce the fourth British Nordic Walking Exel Challenge on Saturday 12 October at Rivington near Bolton this will give you an opportunity to join fellow Nordic Walkers from across the UK.

The Event is taking place in Lever Park situated on the outskirts of Bolton, with easy access from the M6. The park was gifted to the people of Bolton by Lord Leverhulme the soap magnate William Hesketh Lever founder of Lever Brothers (now Unilever). Lever Park has been a Country Park since 1904. The park, which covers about 160 hectares, includes terraced gardens with walks, water features, a Japanese garden with pool, a scale model of Liverpool Castle, and an ornate pigeon tower with a sewing room on the top floor. Much of this is in the process of restoration.

Many of the features included in the landscaping were based on his travels in Japan and Nigeria. The Japanese garden originally consisted of a lake fed by two waterfalls and surrounded by Japanese tea houses, lanterns and exotic plants. However only the lake and bases of the teahouses remain. His travels in Nigeria resulted in the design and construction of a stunning brick built bridge consisting of one large arch capped by six smaller arches. It is known locally as seven arch bridge.

There is no better time to visit Lever Park than October when the wooded hillsides, glades and cascading streams display the deep rich colours of Autumn.

The more adventurous may which to continue through Lever park and climb on to Rivington Pike a well known local landmark. The landmark Pike Tower is a Grade II* listed building on the summit. John Andrews of Rivington Hall built the tower in gritstone on the site of the beacon, one of the beacons spanning England as an early warning system, using its stone for the foundations. It was built and used as a hunting lodge.

The route will take the lower parts of Lever Park leaving plenty of time to explore the upper areas on the next day.
