About the artists
Alex grew up in Sydenham and Bromley. He started learning the piano at the age of 8, and soon after was to begin cultivating a deep interest in improvisation and composing which continues to this day. His first completed piece was a Viennesse style waltz of only three pages.
Over the following years his style was to mellow as his knowledge of music theory and listening/playing repertoire was to expand. He was to start his first serious work; the Piano Sonata no. 1, in June 2014; completed in November 2014. This was his first venture into the Sonata-allegro form.
Today, Alex's music is characterised by humour, poignance and virtuosity. His interest in combining ragtime with the Romantic mode of expression led him to write Trois Rags de Concert (finished in May 2016); three rags which explore the possibilities of structure and harmonic colour within the rhythmic modes of ragtime.
As a pianist, he plays mainly Rachmaninoff, classic ragtime by Joplin, Chas Johnson etc., and his own compositions. He also does contemporary improvisation and is beginning to pick up jazz. Alex's other interests are Mathematics and Philosophy, the former of which he will begin studying in Cambridge in October.
Andrew grew up in Leeds in Yorkshire and studied briefly at Leeds College of Music before going on to Cambridge University to take a degree in Natural Sciences. Whilst at Cambridge he took the advanced piano performance diploma at the Royal College of Music and performed the piano and trumpet with numerous orchestras, operas, musicals and bands.
For many years, Andrew helped with the administration of the Leeds International Piano Competition and it was there that he met his future wife, the Bulgarian pianist Lora Dimitrova. Together with two other pianists and a drummer they have toured around Europe as Quattro Piano Plus, playing classical and popular music which they have arranged for 4 pianos and percussion.
Away from music, Andrew has a passion for computing, business and finance. He is a member of the British Computer Society and has an MBA from CASS Business School in the heart of London's financial district. As his full time profession, he has run his own company for the last 20 years providing consultancy to the UK Financial Services Regulators and financial institutions.
