The Bronchoscopy for Intensive Care and Acute Care (BrIC TM) Course is a multidisciplinary one-day hands-on training bronchoscopy course for those involved in acute care (anaesthetics, intensive care, emergency medicine and acute medicine), designed to improve practice using it for ICU and acute care indications, including airway management, airway haemorrhage, percutaneous tracheostomy and the non intubated patient. There is a large emphasis on simulated scenarios, patient safety and team working. The BrIC Course is predominantly workshop based, with hands-on practice, bronchoscopy simulator time for dedicated competency acquisition and team based scenarios. There is highly experienced international faculty and opportunity to test established and new devices.

The course is support by a number of Industry partners (Olympus, AMBU, ORSIM and Fisher & Paykel) providing the latest equipment and educational tools for maintenance of skills acquired.

Places are limited and are allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

Participants: Suitable for core anaesthetic/ACCS trainees, registrars and consultants in ICU, Anaesthesia and Acute Medicine, nurses and ACCPs, particularly those with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine or advanced airway skills.

Cost:

£350 for Consultants

£300 for Non consultant grade doctors

£300 for ST3 level or below

£200 for Nurses/ACCPs

Aim: To enable the participants to enhance their skills in performing bronchoscopy in the ICU for the commonly encountered indications.

Objectives: By the end of the course, the participants should

  • Know basic bronchial anatomy
  • Be able to set-up Videobronchoscopy and portable devices for emergency situations
  • Understand the indications and contraindications for bronchoscopy in the ICU
  • Have improved their skills in handling, effective navigation and directed sampling/airway clearance through simulation
  • Be able to manipulate the bronchoscope for real-time visualisation of the correct placement of a tracheostomy, withdrawal of an endotracheal tube and safe needle insertion
  • Have a basic understanding of the management of airway haemorrhage, inhalational injury
  • Enhanced Team working in complex bronchoscopy situations

What does the course involve?

The BrIC course is a one-day course which involves didactic lectures, many practical workshops and experience on a bronchoscopy simulator.

What does the course fee include?

The fee includes your place on the one-day course, lunch and two coffee breaks.

Where and when do I register on the day?

The course takes place in many locations throughout Chelsea and Westminster Hospital including the Postgraduate Centre, the Centre for Clinical Practice, the Gleeson lecture theatre and the Academic Atrium. Registration will take place from 08:30-09:00 in the Post Graduate Centre. Once you have booked your place, full details regarding how to register on the day will be sent to you by email.
