Description

PLEASE NOTE: THIS TRAINING IS AVAILABLE ONLY TO PROFESSIONALS WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE IN BRENT, EALING AND HARROW, AND IT IS FREE OF CHARGE.

Sexual Health Information, Empowerment, Learning and Development (SHIELD)

Talking to young people about their sexual health can be a daunting experience. In this training, we draw on our 50 years of expertise of talking to young people about their sexual health and provide a comprehensive overview of the information that you need to know in order to work effectively in this area.

Participants will be able to:

  • list the different methods of contraception and discuss them meaningfully with young people

  • identify sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and know how to prevent them

  • develop skills to support young people to achieve safe, healthy, happy relationships and sex

  • explain confidentiality and the law

  • identify sexual health and wellbeing services (including Brook) to signpost young people to.

We look at how to have difficult conversations with young people and we also discuss the cultural and individual differences that affect relationships and sexuality.

“I’ve been doing this job for almost 15 years and I’m shocked to see how out of date my knowledge is. I thought I was really good at this stuff, but I’ve learnt so much today”. Secondary school teacher, Kent.

“The training was delivered in a passionate and comprehensive way. There is lots here that I will be able to use, especially on how to have difficult conversations”. Integrated Youth Services Worker, Essex.
