Brothers of the Breakwater
Mon 12 December 2016, 12:00 – 14:00 GMT
Plymouth was no stranger to receiving distressing news about the loss of life in Plymouth Sound; the newspapers and burial registers bare out that drownings and accidents in the Sound were relatively common. However the tragedy to befall twenty local men employed on the “Great National Undertaking” – the building of the breakwater – was massive. The local men were lost in November 1838 due to weather conditions and the overturning of their pinnace. Join Graham Naylor who will retell their story and the catastrophe using contemporary news reports which were reported the length and breadth of the British Isles.
