Event description

Brum Service Jam is back and ready to represent Birmingham in the 2019 Global Service Jam, an annual event where local people come together to collaborate, build and test amazing ideas in response to a secret global theme over 48 hours.

Hosted by the Spaghetti Jams crew, (a collective of designers, creatives and changemakers) the Brum Service Jam is open to people from all walks of life, and offers a unique opportunity to meet new people, learn about and experience design mindsets, processes, and tools but most of all flex your creative muscles through some serious play.

The Service Jam is part of a global community of jams that will be taking place in over 100 cities around the world and throughout the weekend we link up with other locations around the world to say hello, hola or Nǐ hǎo, share ideas and even throw down a dance/drawing challenge!

We are excited to be hosting this year's jam at multiple locations, kicking off at Impact Hub Birmingham then moving over to Melting Pot, a new independent collaborative workspace tailor made for the creativity and the creative industries, situated right in the heart of Birminghams creative quarter; Digbeth

Who’s the jam for?

Jams are for the curious and the caring. Whether you're curious about people and exprimentation or you are more experienced in design and making the jam is for you then sign up!

Got any questions? Shoot us a Tweet or drop us an email to spaghettijams@gmail.com.

Why join us:

People attend Jams for lots of different reasons, whether it is to learn something, meet new people, push yourself to try something different or flex your creative muscles there is something for everyone.

What you will learn:

This 48 hour global jam challenge will guide you through a human-centred design process where you’ll join a team, prototype and test your ideas quickly and share them with the world.

Time commitment:

The jam is best experienced when you can take part for the whole weekend so clear you schedule if you can! But if this is not possible, we can always find a way to work around events that might pop up.

Friday 4th 29th March 2019 - 6pm to 9pm

Saturday 30th March 2019 - 9:30am to 5pm

Sunday 31 March 2019 - 9:30am to 4pm

Take a look at our past jams to get a flavour for what you’ll be in for.

See you there!

1. What are the hours of the jam?

The core hours of the jam will be:

Friday 29th March 2019 - 6pm to 9pm

Saturday 30th March 2019 - 9:30am to 5pm

Sunday 31st March 2019 - 9:30am to 4pm

1. I'm not sure if I can attend for the whole weekend. Can I still come?

Yes we can still accommodate you. To get the full experience you really want to try and be there the whole weekend but, if you can only do one or two of the days, just email us to let us know after you've booked your space.

2. What can/can't I bring to the event?

All you need to bring is yourself, your ideas and enthusiasm. But if you like you could add prototyping materials, cardboard, Lego, play dough, whatever you like. If you like prototyping digitally bring a laptop, camera or other relevant tech, along with cables chargers etc. The space may be busy and chaotic at times, so make sure you clearly mark anything you want to take home at the end of the event.

3. What about food and drink?

We'll provide snacks and tea/coffee-making facilities in the jam space for the entire event. On Friday we’ll put dinner on and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

4. What if I can't make the whole Jam?

You really need to be there on Friday evening for the kick-off and secret theme video, and we would love you to join us for the whole weekend, although some participants do choose to join us just one of the other days - Saturday or Sunday. Please let us know if you intend to do this so we can plan timings and manage the number of participants in the space.

5. What happens to the things we make during the jam?

At the end of the jam, we'll upload copies of the things we've made to planet jam (the jam’s website). Everything created during the jam will be released under a Creative Commons License.

6. Are there any other terms and conditions?

Birmingham's Service Jam is part of the Global Service Jam 2019 We ask all participants to confirm that they understand the jam terms and conditions.
