Event description

Description

The BTEC Level 3 Award in the Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment is for instructors to be able to teach a legal, ethical, and medically reviewed course that will allow you to teach the BTEC level 2 Award in the Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment course to others as a qualified and competent instructor.

Unlike other courses this course covers the use of Rigid, Hinged and also Soft-Cuffs.

The course is delivered by Steven Morrison who is a highly experienced security operative with 29 years occupational competence, recognised expert witness on the use of force and subject matter expert on Scots Law to Awarding Bodies and the author of many security training courses.

The Main Aims of the Course are:

To qualify individuals as BTEC Level 3 Handcuff and Soft-Cuff Trainers and certificate them with the BTEC Awarding Body Certificate.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the primary reason for handcuffing.

  • Understand the Health & Safety implications, including Sections 2 and 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the requirements of PUWER as well as the implications of the new Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 and the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.

  • Understand the law, including compliance with: Section 116 of the licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, Common Law of Scotland, and Articles 2, 3, and 5 of the Human Rights Act 1998.

  • Understand other areas of guidance if required such as: The Mental Health Act Code of Practice and NICE guidelines.

  • Understand the medical implications of handcuffing, including positional asphyxia.

  • Demonstrate how to apply handcuffs and soft cuffs to a passive subject.

  • Demonstrate how to apply handcuffs to an aggressive subject.

  • Demonstrate how to remove handcuffs correctly.

It is very important to have received formal instruction and assessment in all of the above as you will be able to evidence that you have received appropriate training to a National Vocational Standard which would be of great importance to you should your competence and ability ever be challenged.

The Law in relation to Handcuffing

This course is legally compliant to Scots Law and the legal status is fully covered on the course. The use of handcuffs are a ‘Use of Force’ option and as such anyone can be trained in the safe and effective use of restraint equipment and most importantly use handcuffs to safeguard the heath, safety and welfare of another person who requires to be mechanically restrained.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There are no ID requirements for this course.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is available at Combridge Street Car Park at a hourly rate of £1.20 per hour. We recommend using Glasgow Subway Park & Ride Scheme at Kelvinbridge Underground which is £5 for all day parking and includes a return subway ticket. You can then use this to travel to Cowcaddens or Buchanan Street Subway Station and our offices are within a 7 minute walk from either subway station. We suggest you avoid parking in the city centre streets as it is £0.65 for 12 minutes parking and can be very expensive.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please feel free to drop us an email at info@proactivesecurity.co if you have any concerns about attending this course. Please also feel free to call the course instructor Steven Morrison who is a recognised Expert Witness on 0789 465 1272.

What's the refund policy?

If by the end afternoon of the course you are unhappy with the course in any way we will provide a 100% refund of your course fee. You will need to handback all legal briefings and the Instructors Handbook as you will not be able to retain these, also you will not be accredited as a Instructor as you will be required to complete the course fully and be 'assessed' as competent and proficient in the safe use of restraint equipment.
