About this event
How can we protect ourselves from the suffering we experience both around us and within?
According to Buddha’s teachings - known as Dharma - suffering does not arise from external conditions alone, but from how we respond to them. Since suffering originates in the mind, true protection comes from training our mind by sincerely applying Buddha’s wisdom in our daily life.
Sincerely going for refuge to the Three Jewels - Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha - is the foundation of the Buddhist path.
We take refuge in Dharma - our inner experience of Buddha’s teachings - because it directly protects us from our delusions, the true source of all suffering.
We take refuge in the Buddhas - fully enlightened beings - because they reveal the path of Dharma and inspire us through their blessings.
We take refuge in the Sangha - the community of pure spiritual practitioners - because they offer support, guidance, and encouragement along the way.
In this day retreat, James Baskerville will lead guided sessions exploring the meaning and practice of Buddhist refuge.
Held at the beautiful Wootton Hall, the day will also include a delicious vegetarian lunch and the opportunity to connect with Sangha in a relaxed and supportive environment. Each session will include a talk, guided meditation, and time for Q&A.
All are welcome - no previous experience necessary.
‘Friends, there is no happiness in this swamp of samsara, so move to the firm ground of liberation.
Meditate according to the advice of your Spiritual Guide and dry up the river of samsaric suffering.
You should consider this well because it is not just words from the mouth, but sincere advice from the heart.‘
"Advice from Atisha’s Heart" is a teaching by Atisha, the revered master who originally established the Kadampa tradition of Buddhism, and was affectionately known as the Refuge Lama.

Frequently asked questions
Everything will be provided for your day. However, if you have special dietary requirements, you may wish to bring your own supplies just in case. We meditate sitting in chairs, but you can bring a cushion to sit on the floor if you prefer. Bring layers to wrap up in case it is cold.
All our events are run by volunteers! So any help is very welcome; this may include serving refreshments and the meal, assisting with washing up in the kitchen, or helping to put away chairs at the end. But if you just want to talk to us, that's fine too.
This beautiful venue is up a long hill off the main road between Canterbury and Folkestone, so you are likely to need a car to get there. Please contact us if you would like to see if we can provide you with a shared car journey, but give us some few days notice to arrange if this is possible.
