A short 90-minute online workshop to give learners the knowledge and confidence to support those struggling with their Council Tax Bills
About this event
A report from Money Advice Trust ‘Council Tax After Covid’ says more than 7 million people in Britain are worried they won’t afford their council tax bills over the next year. Findings showed the severity of the situation for millions of low-income families. This comes as Government figures show council tax arrears at their highest level - £4.4 billion owed in England alone.
Many vulnerable families struggle to access the many discounts, exemptions and support payments available to help pay council tax bills. This workshop should help you support your clients to pay less.
Timing: 90 min awareness raising online workshop
Learning Objectives:
- Understand who is liable for council tax payments
- Be able to identify who might be able to get discount on their council tax bill because of their circumstances and know how to apply for it
- Use a benefits calculator to identify people who could get a reduced council tax bill because their income is low
- Be aware of the consequences of non-payment of council tax
The session will cover council tax for residents of both England and Wales. The course will be practical, interactive and you’ll be expected to participate in group discussions and exercises.
Target Audience: Volunteers and frontline workers supporting vulnerable clients in low income communities to maintain tenancies or helping people with their finances.
