Event description

Description

Budiriro Trust is pleased to announce that Chartwell Dutiro* the renowned and critically acclaimed mbira player, will be returning this year to perform at the Christmas Fundraising Dinner on Saturday December 2nd. His mbira playing takes the listener direct to the heart of his homeland Zimbabwe which is also the country of origin of the mbira itself. This promises to be another unique, lively and uplifting experience.

As a bonus you will enjoy a really fun night out with old friends and new, including our lovely MC, Caroline de Moraes*, who has so generously offered her time again this year to act as Mistress of Ceremonies for this evening of fun. A video of the 50th Anniversary celebrations filmed last July in Zimbabwe by Tom Brooks of Inspiring Film will also be shown.

While enjoying a three-course Christmas Dinner, (including a half bottle wine), a raffle, laughter, dancing and music, you will be actively raising funds through your attendance so that cash can be sent to help young Zimbabweans study for 'A' Level.

Holiday Inn Bloomsbury has been selected again as a suitable intimate central London venue. Numbers are limited to 100 due to the venue size so book by midnight on 30 November 2017 at the latest, to avoid disappointment.

We the trustees look forward to welcoming old friends who share their passion for education in Zimbabwe and to making new ones as we continue the celebration of fifty years of the Trust's work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Chartwell began to play the mbira (an ancient instrument) from the age of 4. He, his brother and teacher would often play mbira all night, calling the ancestral spirits for guidance as has been done in Zimbabwe over centuries. Mbira music has played an important but changing role in Zimbabwe's recent history. It was banned by missionaries in colonial Rhodesia as they wrongly associated it with devil worship.

In 1986 Chartwell joined the world-famous band Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited. Touring the world for eight years with that band, he was their arranger, mbira player and saxophonist. Since 1994 Chartwell has been based in Britain and currently runs an academy where he teaches mbira in Devon.

Mbira tradition is fascinating in itself. 'The infectious sound has complex rhythms that can be enjoyed in different ways depending on the individual listener – for dancing or reflection.'
Don't miss this unique opportunity. If you have yet to hear mbira played this is your chance to experience it! Much more can be found on Chartwell's website chartwelldutiro.com

* Caroline is a freelance broadcaster (you might have caught her on The BBC, BT Sport, and Eurosport) and a passionate supporter of the work of Budiriro Trust.

* There will be a raffle on the night including prizes :

• Dinner for two with wine at Durrants Hotel, George St. London
• Pamper Spa Day at Champneys for 2 people
• a 5 supercar blast at Brands Hatch
• Grizelda Holderness Original Artwork

* Closing date for buying tickets is 12 midnight on 30/11/17
