Build a Lime Kiln
Thu, 30 Mar 2017, 10:00 – Sat, 1 Apr 2017, 16:00 BST
Join Revealing Oldknow’s Legacy and Womersley’s Ltd. as we build a lime kiln using traditional materials in the grounds of Samuel Oldknow’s 19th century lime kilns.
We have an opportunity to get involved in a one-off event here in Marple. At the site of Oldknow’s lime kilns, we will build our own kiln from stone and clay mortar, and light it to create lime mortar. We will use limestone and sand from the same sources Oldknow used to create a traditional lime mortar. Learn how a kiln is built, take part in the kiln construction, see what ingredients make lime mortar and have a go at building a wall using the mortar we make.
This activity will take place over two days – you can book on both, or just on one:
THURSDAY 30 MARCH – Build a lime kiln, add lime mortar ingredients, and light the kiln
SATURDAY 1 APRIL – Remove lime and make hot lime mortar, use the mortar to build a wall.
Each day will last from 10am to 4pm. We will provide personal protective equipment but we ask that you wear safety boots, or at the very least, sturdy walking boots.
