Event description
Build Bridges Narrative Model Training with Lynda McGill (Therapeutic Social Worker)

About this event

Adults strive to support children when they are placed in care, ensuring that the child has a safe home to live in, regular contact with their family, supporting school arrangements and ensuring their Human Rights are upheld. Often less attention is focused on supporting the child with these changes and it can be hard for them to understand the reasons this has occurred in their life and harder still to know what to say about their experiences to parents, siblings, carers professionals, teachers and friends. Left unanswered, children can have great difficulty experiencing psychological safety, adjusting to their new circumstances and accepting the care being offered to them. Adults are often worried that talking with the children about their circumstances will upset the child further or add strain to relationships.

The Narrative Model provides a set of principles to support social workers, birth parents and carers to work together and to dialogue with the child so they are not left alone with this and are helped to psychologically adjust to their experiences. It promotes the pursuit of congruence in the best interests of the child within the care giver network. The principles of the Narrative Model may appear easy but they can be difficult to apply in practice. Dr W Coman and Ms Lynda McGill hav developed the Build Bridges training programme so that Social Workers have a procedure for applying the Narrative Model and have the necessary competencies and confidence for doing so. Feedback from Social Work and other professionals across multiple organisations in the UK and Ireland confirms the Face Validity of this Model.
