This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in software engineering to hear from different areas of our engineering department.

You'll hear from Platform, Common Services and BBC Bitesize. Each presentation will provide a glimpse into the engineering and scalability challenges.

A brief synopsis of the first talk:

BBC Bitesize: From FTP to Serverless Architecture

When Bitesize first appeared on the Internet developers were FTPing their Dreamweaver-crafted templates to a single server. 19 years later, after evolving into a PHP monolith, we're embracing serverless architecture and microservices patterns to bring the service to up to 3 million students every week.

A brief synopsis of the evening's second talk

BBC Bitesize: Building Great Products

The most important person in the Bitesize workflow is the end user. Whether it be student or teacher, our goal is to continually improve our products to provide a world-class experience. This talk will discuss how we try to achieve this from a developer’s perspective. It will cover not only high-level processes such as Agile, but the day-to-day tools we use to deliver new features and improvements.

A brief synopsis of the evening's third talk.

BBC Bitesize App: Revision on the go

Not only is Bitesize evolving - but so is its audience. In a world where more and more 15-16 year olds use a smart phone device, Bitesize needed to provide more snackable, more ‘Bitesize' revision guides. Creation of a fully personalised experience, as well as providing the student a method of testing what they know has proved to be an invaluable tool for their exams. Come and hear how we built this.

A brief synopsis of the evening's final talk.

Platform and Common Services will talk about the Aggregated Metadata Platform product and what the team are doing.

The Aggregated Metadata Platform team are building services behind every aspect of the BBC’s programmes – for TV, radio, and iPlayer. We provide the information that enables terabytes of programmes to be delivered, from the guide on your TV to letting you catch up later online.

Come and hear about how we’re using microservices and AWS to make this all work.

Food & drinks will be provided on the night.

Please register your interest. Due to limited availability, tickets will be sent by invitation only.
