Event description
An online event with the founding director of Undiscovered Country, Author and Activist for Peace Building, Roy Leighton

About this Event

Educational institutions can too often be battlegrounds where everyday conflict is both visible and hidden. The implicit and explicit interactions of the individual, others and the environment can breed a culture of fear and frustration between teachers and pupils, staff and leadership. This session will explore the often unseen and unspoken kinds of violence: direct violence; institutional violence and cultural violence.

We will focus on ways to transform a culture of conflict to one of peacemaking, peacebuilding and peacekeeping in educational settings and explore what this understanding will mean for leaders tasked with providing peaceful and productive learning and working environments where everyone can thrive, not just survive.

Expect to be challenged as leaders to reflect and rethink how you can shape educational institutions that can develop young people to become both academically competent and socially skilled. We will reflect on the question: ‘Is your students' daily learning experience preparing them to not only survive a world of conflict but to be agents of change within it?’

This event will be evidence based to show how some schools have shifted from the rhetoric to reality whilst others are still talking. It is possible to create and sustain the conditions to support both a rational and translational approach to education through a balance between art and science, intuition and reason.

About Roy Leighton

Roy has been using the visual and performing arts to support the education and character development of young people and adults in schools and businesses globally for over 30 years. He is the author of eight books exploring creative classroom practice and parenting; change management and the role of spirituality in schools.

Over the past year Roy took a semi-sabbatical at Cambridge University as an MPhil student researching ‘Knowledge, Power and Politics’. Roy was invited to Cambridge as the work that he has been doing merging art and science, intuition and logic to support value creating cultures is at the heart of this new masters degree.

Roy has been an advocate of developing what Michael Fullan calls the three ‘T’s for education in the 21st Century: technology, transition and teaching. He has been designing and delivering hybrid learning linking classrooms globally before COVID made blended learning both necessary and fashionable.
