Building Back Better:

Quality Improvement Leads to Systemic Change

Facilitated by: Joanna Gilchrist, Leading Improvement Team, Scottish Government

About the course:

Join Joanna Gilchrist from the Scottish Government’s Leading Improvement Team to explore how you could apply improvement thinking to your leadership and use an improvement approach to build back better and support the delivery of outcomes.

Quality improvement methods are helping to make a difference and improve services across public services. Now, more than ever, these approaches and methods are relevant given the level of change we are experiencing and the Scottish approach to policy and service delivery which has been set out by the First Minister as we respond, recover and renew.

The pandemic has highlighted how interconnected the work we do is. There are few health problems that are not also social problems. There are few economic issues that are not also issues of connectivity, education and skills. An improvement approach helps us to create the conditions for systemic change. It offers a methodology to empower and harness the energy and creativity of front line staff and communities in developing, testing and implementing changes that put service users at the centre.

During the course we will together explore:

  • how quality improvement is fundamental to the Scottish approach to the delivery of public services (3 Step Improvement Framework)
  • creating the conditions for change thinking about leadership, staff readiness for change and engaging your Board with quality improvement
  • improvement thinking and tools – an opportunity to explore a tried and tested approach to making sustainable improvements to your work.

The course will be run over three interactive online sessions during which you will be invited to reflect on how you might apply the approach and tools to your own context. There will be 30 minutes of offline work to be completed after sessions one and two to enable you to apply and share your learning about using some of the tools.

Session one: Thursday 12th November, 9.15am -11.30 am

Session two: Wednesday 25th November, 9.30am -11.30 am

Session three: Thursday 10th December, 9.30am -11.30 am

The course will be held on WebEx. Joining instructions will be sent in advance of the session. Please allow time to login to webex and become familiar with the system before a 9:30 start for the first session.

This FREE programme is open to CEOs and senior leaders of voluntary sector organisations and will be of specific interest for any new in role CEOs within the last 12 months.
