This workshop is an intensive introduction to building digital scholarly editions following the guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). The TEI Guidelines are the de facto standard for recording our interpretation of historical texts for research through digital markup. Although the very general TEI Guidelines are used for many purposes, this workshop will assume that you are interested in creating digital scholarly editions of texts. This workshop will explain the XML (Extensible Markup Language) format and the vocabulary of the TEI through both lectures and practical hands-on exercises by participants. No previous experience with XML or TEI markup is assumed, and introductions to both of these will be provided as part of the workshop.

The workshop will provide a basic level of introduction to those modules of the TEI which are most used by those creating digital scholarly editions, as well as a brief introduction to customising the TEI for your own project.The workshop will conclude with considerations of the various routes to publishing a TEI-based digital scholarly edition. Participants do not need to provide their own materials as the exercises will use pre-prepared texts, however you will be encouraged to consider how you might apply what you have learned to your own materials.

Schedule

The workshop will take place over five full days, June 19th - 23rd inclusive. Space is limited, so individuals are asked not to register unless they can commit to a full week of sessions. A more detailed schedule will be circulated prior to the event.

Requirements

Maximum participants: 10

No experience with TEI or XML editing is required. Instructions on how to install the Oxygen XML Editor on participants’ own laptops will be provided shortly before the workshop.

Workshop participants must have basic computer literacy skills and are required to bring their own laptops.

About the Instructors

JAMES CUMMINGS is the senior lecturer for late-medieval literature and digital humanities in the School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics at Newcastle University in the UK. He studies the use of digital technology for scholarly editing and also late-medieval drama. He has decades of experience with the TEI including being elected to the TEI Consortium’s Technical Council for many years and now its Board of Directors. PATRICIA O'CONNOR is a postdoctoral researcher for the RESCAPÉ handwritten text recognition project on the manuscripts of the Library of Turin, which were damaged and partly destroyed by a fire in 1904, at the École nationale des chartes and the Jean-Mabillon Centre, at PSL Université in Paris. She specialises in Old English literature and particularly interested in the representation of marginalia in digital scholarly editions. She has been the Communications Officer for the TEI Consortium since 2020 and has recently been elected to the TEI Consortium’s Technical Council.
