Building Effective Academic-Industrial Partnerships in Acoustics

About this Event

Dates: 8 April, 2019 - 9 April, 2019

Location: 170 Queen's Gate, Imperial College London

Summary

The UK Acoustics Network (UKAN) Early Careers Special Interest Group (SIG-ECG) is running this event for UKAN’s early career researchers on building effective academic-industrial partnerships in Acoustics. Industry partners include AECOM, AudioAnalytic, Precision Acoustics, Dyson, Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), and the John Cotton Group.

The event is aimed at early career UKAN members who want to undertake research in collaboration with industry and civil service partners. It will provide a forum where attendees can share their research and career ambitions and build working relationships with industry early in their careers. The focus is on providing early career researchers with the opportunity to form relationships with industry partners who could benefit from their research work in the future.

Both attendees and industry partners will give presentations. Each industry partner will present for 15-20 minutes on who they are, how academic research has added value to their organisation, and what they identify as the future opportunities of acoustics research. Each attendee will do a 3 minute presentation to industry partners and other attendees about their research, their career goals with regards to partnering with industry, why they think their research will have an economic impact, and how they plan to go about forming partnerships with industry. There will also be a panel discussion, during which attendees can ask questions, and time for one-on-one networking.

Professor Richard Craster, Professor of Applied Mathematics at Imperial College, will open the event. The keynote address will be given by Professor Barry Gibbs, President of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and coordinator of the Vibro-Acoustics Special Interest Group (SIG-VA). The second meeting of SIG-VA will be held as a satellite event on the afternoon of the 9th April. There will also be a tour of the Non-Destructive Evaluation Group facilities at Imperial College London on the 9th.

A limited number of places are available on a first come basis. Tickets are £100 per person including lunch and morning and afternoon tea. Please arrange your own travel and accommodation.
