Building Knowledge Neighbourhoods
Symposium
4 Nov 2017
Hybrid Lab Berlin
A Collaboration between the University of Nottingham, Architectural Association Housing and Urbanism Programme, TU Berlin, Chair of Architectural Theory Prof. Jörg Gleiter, the Chair for Urban Design and Urbanization Prof. Jörg Stollmann and Hybrid Lab Berlin.
In recent years we have witnessed the growth of shared and serviced work environments suited to the patterns of the creative and technology industries. Simultaneously, service delivery patterns are beginning to move over into the residential sector. Accordingly, there is a need to develop new kinds of crossover living and working environments based on these models. A series of existing cases in Berlin, London, and elsewhere suggest that new kinds of residential buildings – often user-driven in their design origins – offer increased opportunities to support work spaces, neighbourhood resources, and improved integration with local mobility patterns.
This one-day symposium brings together academics and practitioners from Nottingham, Berlin and London to discuss new approaches to the design, planning, and servicing of these emerging knowledge neighbourhoods; their range and programmatic diversity; their morphologies and densities as well as their relationship to mobility and a broader set of urban resources.
