Building Parent Participation in Education: learning from the Netherlands

One thing that has been learned during the lockdown is the important role that parents play in supporting their children’s learning. The indication is that children who have been well-supported by their families have pulled ahead of their peers in terms of their academic progress.

Parental Involvement 3.0 is an inspirational project in the Netherlands which encourages and supports schools to work individually with each family throughout a child’s school career to agree how they can share responsibility for learning and development, with the focus on building trusting relationships. Join this session to hear about this effective model and discuss how you might be able to adapt it for use at your own school – with a particular focus on reaching disengaged families.

Audience: School leaders, teachers and family support workers at primary and secondary level.

Lotte van der Goot is an educational adviser and trainer at CPS in the Netherlands. She guides schools in strengthening cooperation with parents and increasing the quality of teaching to achieve good outcomes for every child. Lotte did her teacher training at university and then worked as a teacher and team leader at a primary school with thirty different nationalities in Amsterdam. While teaching, she did a master's degree in Educational Science at the University of Amsterdam, where she wrote a thesis on teacher-student interactions in the classroom.

Fiona Carnie is an educationalist and writer. She has written widely about the importance of parent and community involvement in education and her latest book, Rebuilding our Schools from the Bottom Up, discusses the voice and participation of young people, parents, teachers and members of the local community in school development. Fiona is the Project Lead for Bristol Education Partnership.
