About this event
Earlier this year, the Centre for Joined Up Sustainability Transformations (JUST) launched at the People's History Museum, a new powerhouse of social science research and action for accelerating a fair and equitable transformation into a low carbon society. With support from ESRC over the next five years, this national Centre is focused on understanding what works where, why, and for whom in sustainable living.
The Young Foundation are supporting the Centre as its impact partner, ensuring that this groundbreaking research reaches the people and places it needs to, nurturing the conditions for change across the UK.
We invite you to join us as we share opportunities for the Power of Participation to be unlocked through the Centre, reaching out to those in policy or practice across a range of disciplines who are committed to justice and change – for people and the planet.
The power of participation for a JUST future
· People around the world are experiencing climate change in increasingly disruptive ways, and most people want to see stronger action taken to fight climate change. The UK is committed to acting, and the UK Government has adopted a suite of policies to get us there.
· However, as we move away from activities that are harming the planet, our everyday lives are likely to change. Reaching these goals requires the participation of everyone, in all parts of the UK. To do this, we must re-write the rulebook, enabling active participation, co-operation and mutual responsibility – reinventing our standard, normal practices and ways of working together to achieve a just climate future.
· The JUST Centre is grounded in this pursuit – sustainability transformations that are people-centred, joined up and socially just. Over the next five years, the Centre will conduct groundbreaking research and create tools that goes beyond technical and behavioural to understand more effectively and equitably how we can address the social and political barriers that may prevent us from achieving this future.
Accelerating action for joined-up sustainability transformations
We will also be launching our first opportunity for participation in the JUST Centre – our Practice-Builders Network, aimed at mobilising communities of practice who are empowering social change, building momentum, and creating real-world action towards a joined-up, sustainable, and transformed future.
This includes, but is not limited to, those undertaking practice within or across:
· Democratic innovations: individuals reshaping the possibilities of democratic participation to tackle social, economic and environmental injustices.
· Social and solidarity economies: individuals innovating for socially just economic activity within planetary means.
· Built and social infrastructures: individuals reimaging the role of physical infrastructures and nurturing social relations of care that could enable just sustainability practices to thrive.
This webinar will be recorded and available for viewing following the event. Those who sign-up to attend will receive additional information about our Practice-Builders Network following the webinar.
