Building relationships for resilience in Children and Young People

Meaningful relationships and connections support children and young people to build resilience and reduce the risk of long-term impacts of ACEs. This session aims to explain the concept of attunement and how it builds connection and positive communication in children’s important relationships.

The concept of attunement refers to the way we react to make others feel understood. It is about ‘feeling felt’ when interacting and resonating with others. When we have an attuned interaction with someone, both parties contribute equally and feel heard and listened to. This session will explore how to build this attunement when working with children and young people who have experienced ACEs.

Amanda and Emma are Educational Psychologists for Bristol City Council. They have a special interest in working with families and school staff using a therapeutic intervention that aims to enhance their attunement with children and young people. In all aspects of their work they aim to build the positive relationships adults have with children and young people, given the importance of these relationships to children’s wellbeing at school.
