Event description
Providing resilience tools for teaching professionals to manage their own wellbeing and performance

About this Event

Building Confidence and Resilience in the Classroom

This day will be for all classroom teachers and teaching assistants and will focus on giving teachers the necessary tools to manage themselves effectively and know the warning signs of toxic stress and what to do about it. Essentially this will focus on wellbeing for teaching staff. Although this may be most applicable to those new to the profession, the need to prioritise personal wellbeing is just as important a message for teachers who have been in the profession for many years. Some themes throughout the day include

- Building resilience and confidence

- Appropriate boundary setting to avoid toxic stress and burnout

- Resilience inventory – how do you currently manage resilience and how can you build and apply these tools to other areas of your life

Do you sometimes struggle to keep a class engaged?

  • Are your students anxious about their performance but you are not sure how to help?
  • Do your students seem unable to cope with challenge or lack confidence?
  • Do you find it difficult to manage disruptive pupils in the classroom?

If any of these questions resonate for you, then this course will help you to develop new skills to help your students.

In order for children to flourish in education, they need to be helped to build confidence and resilience. And yet, more children than ever seem to find school stressful and there are greater numbers of children suffering from mental health issues. How can teachers learn to support their pupils in their classrooms ways that build resilience and confidence?

Recent research in neuroscience from the fields of mental health, developmental psychology and education is providing important evidence for what might work in building confidence and resilience. Professor Patricia Riddell has, therefore, combined her expertise in these areas to create a workshop to help teachers to learn new skills which will better support their pupils. The course is highly interactive, introducing new concepts, showing how these can be applied directly in a school environment, and providing an opportunity to try out these new ideas with fellow participants. Areas covered will include:

• Creating psychologically safe environments

• How to reduce stress and increase resilience

• Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

• Managing disruptive pupils

• The developing brain

• Developing confidence in self and others

• Quieting the inner critic

The course will provide opportunities to network with other school teachers and to develop and share best practice within the group. Teachers should expect to leave with a tool box of new tips and techniques designed to improve their ability to help students increase their confidence and resilience which they can try out immediately back in their own school environment.
