Event description

Description

Building resilience and supporting the mental health needs of looked after children

Prior to entering care looked after children and young people may have been exposed to a multitude of complex mental health risk factors which can increase their vulnerability.

Designed for foster carers, social workers and designated teachers, this free masterclass developed by The Fostering Network and Young Minds (https://youngminds.org.uk/) will explore these risk factors, examining their potential on young people; and how the team around the child can help reduce risk, build resilience and support them in becoming happy adults.

Aims and objectives

At the end of the masterclass you will be able to:

  • Identify the risk factors to mental health and explore the prevalence of such factors in looked after children’s experiences, including the impact of adverse childhood experience (ACEs), trauma, and the impact of unsecure attachment.
  • Identify ways of reducing mental health risk factors in looked after young people.
  • Identify and understand issues around stigma.
  • Develop practical tools to build resilience in looked after children and young people.
