Description

Speaker: Kathryn McEwen, Managing Director, Working with Resilience, Adelaide, Australia

Against the new workplace normal of turbulence, complexity and pressure, resilience has become a ‘must have’ attribute. To date, focus has mainly been on how we help individuals thrive. This is despite long-standing recognition that sustainable change at work is best achieved through a systemic approach that considers the interplay between employees, their leaders, the teams they work within and the workplace challenges faced.

This session will look at how thinking in the area of resilience has developed and what the expectations and actions of organisations have done to help shape best practice. As an example, the session will introduce a validated framework, the Resilience at Work (R@W) Toolkit, designed to assist building resilience in a systemic way. Many techniques have been used and the example of this toolkit, which is used internationally in coaching and research, will be used in the context of comparing approaches available to Business Psychologists in providing solutions and in the discussion of best practice. For further information see www.workingwithresilience.com.au.

We will explore:

• The seven components of personal resilience at work and how to support organisations to embed these
• The elements that create team resilience, including how these are different from individual resilience and how to explore and build these within teams
• The role of leaders in creating a resilient culture
• The link between workforce resilience and organisational resiliency.

The Facilitator

Kathryn McEwen is recognised internationally as a thought leader in workplace resilience. Her passion is in coaching people to thrive in workplaces that are turbulent, complex and pressurised. She has used her extensive skills and experience as an organisational psychologist, coach and mediator to pioneer development of the Resilience at Work (R@W) Toolkit, a systemic and evidence-based set of measures and models to build personal, team and leader resilience at work. This Toolkit is being used globally in practice and is part of more than 70 university research studies.

Kathryn has authored three books on this topic entitled Building Resilience at Work; Building Your Resilience: How to Thrive in a Challenging Job and Building Team Resilience. Based in South Australia, she leads Working With Resilience, a consortium of researchers and practitioners working to support people in creating sustainable performance at work.

The unique contribution made by her work in this emerging area has been recognised by the Australian Psychological Society who awarded the status of ‘Fellow’ for her contribution to psychology.

It is expected that the presentation will last 45 minutes followed by approximately 30 minutes of Q&A and networking will as usual be encouraged at this event.
