What to expect!

This engaging and practical training explores the important relationship between risk and play, helping educators and practitioners support children’s development through challenging, meaningful experiences.

In this workshop, you’ll:

  • Understand the difference between good and bad risks and hazards in play environments.
  • Explore the benefits of risk-taking for children's resilience, confidence, and physical and emotional development.
  • Learn about risk-rich play types like climbing, rough and tumble, and tool use
  • Discover how to enable children’s risk-taking in safe, developmentally appropriate ways.
  • Gain practical strategies for risk-benefit assessment, dynamic risk management, and developing supportive policies.
  • Leave with a toolkit of ideas—from fire bowls and tree climbing to loose parts and go-carts—to inspire more adventurous, empowering play.

Ideal for teachers, early years practitioners, playworkers, and anyone involved in creating or supervising play spaces. This training helps shift the mindset from risk-avoidance to risk management that supports growth.
