This practical webinar will show how pupils can be introduced to the abstract substantive concept of trade which can then be systematically revisited wherever it occurs in content, ensuring that pupils accumulate powerful knowledge around it for retrieval as they progress through medium term plans. Reference will be made to the possible study of significant individuals at KS1 that were involved in trade such as Christopher Columbus. An overview will be given of the development of trade within and between historic civilisations and cultures from the Neolithic period of the Stone Age onwards. This will include examples of trading in the Bronze and Iron ages, in ancient civilisations, during the periods of ancient Greece, the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and including the curricular options of Islamic Civilisations, the Maya and Benin.
