‘An opportunity for construction companies to contribute towards reforming the Scottish compliance agenda within the built environment’

The Grenfell Tower fire in London focused the spotlight on the built environment and how buildings are designed, constructed and procured in a way that has not been seen for many years. Around the same time, an independent report by Professor John Cole on the failure of compliance in Edinburgh schools was published, followed by the closure of the Dumfries and Galloway (DG One) leisure complex.

Evidence of non-compliance has not traditionally been recorded and the majority of buildings do not suffer significant compliance issues. However, these reports point towards a systemic failure, rather than isolated incidents.

Through workshops, research and dissemination, the Scottish Government’s aim is to ensure an effective and sustainable building standards service that is fit for purpose, no matter where you are in the country.

This is an opportunity for contractors to analyse the current system, pinpoint improvements and identify opportunities for implementation.
