Building Survey at Woodhead Lead Mine, Carsphairn
Date and time
Join Can You Dig It as they survey some of the upstanding ruins at ‘Scotland’s only example of an industrial ghost town’!
About this event
We’ve had the talk, we’ve had the tour – now it’s time to actually do some recording! Hidden near to Carsphairn are the remains of an entire mining village built at Woodhead in the 1830s. As well as a school, library and housing, it’s still possible to make out the structures and areas central to the mine’s workings, which went from mining the lead right through to smelting it in furnaces.
Come along and spend a few hours at this amazing site and learn all about the industrial processes at work. We’ll also be joined by local historian, Anna Campbell, who can tell you about the people who lived there while we survey. This will be a great chance to get a detailed record of some of the structures which are most in need, and to show these buildings some more of the attention that they deserve!
Note: This event will involve a fairly strenuous walk over rough terrain, and unfortunately there will be no toilet facilities on site.
