Join us for a full day workshop for sustainability standard initiatives and other organisations who want to further their work on the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of their systems.
What are the key learning objectives?
Introduce what a robust M&E system looks like and what it means to have an M&E system integrated into an organisation.
Learn about the key ingredients for building a solid base of an M&E system (ensuring adequate budgetary, human resources and senior management support for building robust M&E systems and stakeholder engagement).
Provide guidance on the concept of a theory of change and practice developing potential causal pathways.
Introduce the concepts and types of M&E indicators.
Receive an overview of different data collection strategies for performance monitoring and in depth studies (outcome and impact evaluations).
How is the day structured?
The workshop is comprised of four main sessions and one optional lunch break activity:
Building a solid base for monitoring and evaluation
This session will provide an introduction to the day and overview of what is unique about sustainability standards’ M&E systems. We aim to stimulate discussions on the building blocks of an M&E system and share some insights on what has worked for organisations at different stages of development.
Getting started developing a Theory of Change (ToC)
This session will introduce the concept of a ToC, including the main elements and different uses. It will provide a number of recommendations for how to develop a ToC, including inspiring examples of various examples and formats. The session is also an opportunity to get a flavour about the process of developing causal pathways.
During this brief and optional session participants will get an overview of the process to demonstrate compliance with the Impacts Code as well as a quick tour of the different tools and resources available.
Structuring data collection activities
This sessions will give an overview of data collection activities and how they help understand whether an organisation is achieving its intended change. We will cover the differences between performance monitoring and in-depth evaluations and explain how both functions are complementary.
It will also provide clarity about the differences between compliance and M&E indicators.
Building the grounds for a learning organisation
This session will explore different strategies that organisations can implement from the first day to help ensure that learnings from their M&E system are used to drive improvement.
