Buildings and health:

How can the indoor built environment help to reduce sedentary behaviour and promote physical activity?

 Tuesday 13 October 2015
18:00 to 19:15 followed by drinks and networking (registration from 17:30)

BRI Special Issue

The health risks of physical inactivity are now widely understood. However, the role and influence of the indoor built environment is only beginning to be questioned for its potential role in reducing sedentary behaviour and promoting more physical activity, for building occupants.

This event will highlight new research just published in a special issue of Building Research & Information* on the potential changes in movement that can be made by the design, management and operation of the indoor built environment for different demographics and contexts: home, school and workplace.

The challenge of moving from research to action will be debated by a panel of experts. There will be time for audience Q&A and discussion to consider the diverse factors that influence effective intervention strategies and to identify potential barriers in achieving ‘Active Design’.

Chair:

Professor Alan Penn, Dean of UCL’s Bartlett Faculty; Co-Chair Design Commission Inquiry: Built Environment & Behaviour

Speakers:

Professor Alexi Marmot, University College London

Katherine Brookfield, University of Edinburgh

Marcella Ucci, University College London

Panelists:

Annmarie Connolly, Public Health England

Rachel Toms, Design Council

Bill Page, BCO British Council for Offices & Legal & General

The event will be followed by drinks and networking.
