Join our in-person bumblebee workshop, led by Helen Dickinson. This will be split into a morning and afternoon session, in the morning Helen will cover the basics of bumblebee ecology and identification. After a short lunch break, we will head out to the park grounds to put our new ID skills into practice. This will consist of a walk to observe, identify and record the Bumblebee species we can find.

Workshop Leader: Helen Dickinson is the Senior Surveys Officer with Bumblebee Conservation Trust. With a background in mammal and invertebrate ecology, Helen has worked for the Trust for almost 10 years. Helens work now focuses on coordinating the national bumblebee monitoring scheme BeeWalk for BBCT.

Suitable for: Beginners (ages 16 and over)

What to bring: Suitable outdoor footwear and warm clothing, lunch, waterproofs, notepad and pen. If you have one, please bring a hand lens and any relevant ID books (spares will be available). Teas/coffees will be provided.

Cost: Free (donations to TWIC welcome). Note that a £3 car parking charge applies.

Travel: Parking is available at Vogrie Country Park in the visitor’s parking lot (£3 for the day). There is limited access to the venue by public transport. The Borders Bus 51 from Edinburgh stops at Cranston House, from where it is a 30min walk to Vogrie Country Park.

TWIC is the Local Environmental Records Centre for south east and part of central Scotland that collects, collates and disseminates information about the wildlife in our area. The Centre is a not-for-profit company with charitable status and provides objective, independent wildlife information for people and organisations.

TWIC is the focal point for biological recording in our area and is working to increase our knowledge of the land, freshwater and marine wildlife throughout our region. The Centre provides a wide range of data services; we routinely supply data to local authorities for screening planning applications, to consultants for preparing environmental assessments and to students and academics for research.

The ongoing development of TWIC and its services is funded by grant aid from NatureScot, service level agreements with local authorities and income from contract work, projects and voluntary contributions.
