Event description

Description

This event launches two new books published by Oxford University Press that have been written by University of Portsmouth academics.

George Burrows' book, 'The Recordings of Andy Kirk and his Clouds of Joy' examines the recordings of this black jazz band from Kansas City to present a new theory concerning musical-racial understandings in jazz.

Anna Bull's book, 'Class, control, and classical music', is an ethnographic study of young people playing in classical music ensembles in the south of England, which presents new explanations for class and gender inequalities within classical music.

Doors will open at 4.30pm - the BAR will be open!

5pm Bull and Burrows will offer some reflections on each others' books, and will invite questions from attendees.

5.30pm A specially-formed band will perform some music recorded by Kirk's band.

6.15pm Celebrations continue

All welcome!
