Event Details

London is home to over one million SMEs, including micro-businesses, that account for 99.8% of businesses and nearly half the capital’s jobs. Such SMEs contain much of London’s future innovation, enterprise and growth. For these micro and small enterprises, the top 3 costs they face are rent, rates and staff.

Workspaces including incubators, accelerators, co-working spaces, artists’ studios, and maker spaces, play an important role in the continued success of London’s economy and they want to provide the right space, for the right people, in the right place for the right price. They need to make their spaces work for all Londoners. However, workspaces must be able to manage their costs to remain financially viable.

Research has shown that there continues to be a lack of understanding on:

  • What are business rates and how it is calculated?

  • The eligibility for business rates relief and how to apply for it as there is no consistent approach across all the local authorities.

As flexible working and the creation of micro businesses continues to grow the need to have affordable workspace becomes more important to create and sustain employment in the capital.

Understanding Business Rates

This new initiative supported by the Greater London Authority and London Growth Hub aims to try and address this by:

  • Helping bridge the knowledge gap in terms of Workspace providers, across Inner and Outer London, understanding of Business Rates and Business Rates Relief

  • Identify and share good practice in relation to the processes for granting small business rates relief as applicable to open workspaces

  • Getting workspace providers and local authorities to work together in a collaborative way to make the application process for Business Rates Relief simplified and consistent

How will we do this?

Westminster Council in partnership with London Business Partnership Limited, our delivery partner, will be hosting this short workshop, with industry experts, GeraldEve.

Who should attend?

Workspace providers, the owners/managers of co-working spaces, incubation and shared workshop space.

What it involves:

A short training session explaining about business rates, business rates relief.

This is followed by a networking event to bring local authorities and workspace providers together to help create an understanding of business rate policies, practices (including accessing business rate relief) consistency of how business rate is calculated/charged across the capital and practical suggestions to improve the current system.
