Given the continued fast pace of change and restructuring in organisations this is a timely event for those interested in refreshing their knowledge or for those who may be undertaking restructuring and redundancy for the first time. The session will provide delegates with an overview of the redundancy process from start to finish - giving practical tips and advice on how to manage the process in order to avoid claims of unfair dismissal and discrimination. The session will also cover recent case law and examples where processes have not be followed effectively and the potential implications.

In particular, the session will cover the following:
• Definition of ‘redundancy’ and what constitutes a genuine redundancy situation
• Redundancy procedure
• Choosing a fair pool and applying appropriate selection criteria
• Duty to consult
• Suitable alternative employment
• Redundancy payments
• Developments in case law/legislation

Speaker:

Jahad Rahman, Partner, Rahman Lowe Solicitors, Canary Wharf, London

Jahad specialises in employment and discrimination law. He advises businesses on all aspects of employment law including discrimination, equal pay, whistleblowing, unfair dismissal, redundancy, TUPE, industrial disputes and breach of contract claims. He acts for clients in a wide range of sectors, including luxury brands, retail, real estate and niche financial institutions. He also acts for senior executives and regularly advises on complex high value bonus disputes and restrictive covenant issues.

He has extensive experience of litigating in the Employment Tribunal, the Employment Appeal Tribunal and the High Court. He has written widely on employment law issues. He regularly speaks at conferences and seminars and provides bespoke training on employment and equality issues.

Jahad is ranked as a Recommended Lawyer in Employment Law and described as ‘excellent’ in the 2014 Edition of the Legal 500 Guide to the UK Legal Profession. The most recent edition of the Legal 500 describes Jahad as “Commercial, thorough and pragmatic”.

Jahad is a member of the Law Society and the Employment Lawyers Association.
