About This Workshop

Busy Rascals is delighted that Rebecca Sheikh of Flourishing Childhood will be visiting us to talk about '20 Alternatives to Losing your cool with the kids'. We are very grateful to Maple Walk School for kindly hosting us for this event.

In this workshop we will look a little closer at 20 ways we can support our children (and ourselves) through challenging behaviour. They are 20 tools you can draw upon when you feel like you want to just scream from frustration or at the end of your tether as the use of rewards or punishments just don't seem to work.

We will cover topics such as:
  • underlying needs
  • underlying feelings
  • giving choices
  • natural consequences
  • use of play
  • conflict resolution
Each of these draws on the philosophy of Dr Solter called 'Aware Parenting'.

'Aware Parenting' is a philosophy of child rearing that has the potential to change the world. Based on current research in child development, Aware Parenting questions most traditional assumptions about raising children, and proposes a new approach that can significantly improve relationships within a family. Parents who follow this approach raise children who are cooperative, compassionate, competent, nonviolent, and drug free.

You will take away a deeper knowledge of 20 alternatives to rewards or punishments to better support you with parenting in a more conscious and thoughtful way.

Please note that there is no authorised parking available for attendees on site at the school. There is limited on street pay and display parking spaces available on nearby roads (Harlesden Road, Longstone Avenue on the side of Roundwood Park, Ashdon Road and Burns Road). This is limited to 4 hours pay and display parking. There is a 24 hour pay and display car park called "Harlesden Plaza Car Park" which charges £2 per hour parking and has plenty of spaces. It is located just off Manor Park Road which is round the corner from the school.

About Busy Rascals

Set up in 2012, Busy Rascals is a community project set up and run by Sharmine Chowdhury-Tse, local mum of two. Busy Rascals was set up in response to local parents asking Sharmine to organise local baby and children's activities for the local community following her successful weekly NCT coffee tea social support morning which she set up in 2011 in NW London whilst pregnant with her oldest child. Busy Rascals aims to support parents and carers with their babies and children. We host a variety of weekday classes and activities and one Saturday morning class a month. We are passionate about the wellbeing of children and their parents and supporting parents to make informed decisions and therefore host a variety of adhoc workshops to inform parents about topics relating to parenting and caring for their children, such as Paediatric First Aid. We also run adhoc fundraising events such as our own seasonal parties/fairs (Winter, Annual celebration, Easter) for the local parent and carer community and their children raising money for various charities which include NCT, British Lung Foundation, NSPCC and Women Rape Crisis Center. Many parents find it difficult returning to work after having children. 90% of the classes, activities, events and workshops we organise are run by parents to support them back into the workforce after having children.
