Buzz, Flap, Flutter - Marton Mere LNR – Discovery Walk 2 of 4

A Celebration of Birds, Pollinators, Butterflies, Dragonflies and Wildflowers

09:30-12:00 Saturday 12th July | 🕘 All ages welcome!

Join us for the second in our summer Discovery Walk series, as we celebrate the extraordinary wildlife that calls Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve home during the height of summer.

This walk is all about movement and life — the buzz of bees weaving between wildflowers, the flap of wings overhead as birds dart between reedbeds, and the flutter of butterflies and dragonflies dancing through the air.

With our knowledgeable volunteers to guide you, we’ll take in the sights and sounds of the reserve’s most colourful and charismatic (and important) creatures.

Expect to see:

🌸 A burst of wildflowers in full bloom, drawing in hoverflies, honeybees and bumblebees.

🦋 Summer butterflies like Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper and Red Admiral

🪰 Dragonflies and damselflies patrolling the ponds and ditches – watch for the dazzling flash of a Broad-bodied Chaser or the delicate shimmer of a Blue-tailed Damselfly

🦜 Warblers and reed-loving birds – including Blackcap, Reed Warbler, reed Bunting and the ever-vocal Cetti’s Warbler

We’ll also discuss how the habitats across the site are carefully managed to support these species — and how even the smallest patch of wild space can play a big role in their survival.

This is a relaxed, family-friendly walk suitable for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re an experienced naturalist or just curious to learn more about the wildlife on your doorstep, we’d love to see you there.

Bring your binoculars, your camera, or just your curiosity — and prepare to be inspired by the buzz, flap and flutter of a summer’s day at Marton Mere.

If we are really lucky, we could see a Hobby or even a Red-footed Falcon that hunt dragonflies and are so agile that they have even been know to take Swallows!

Be sure to bring binoculars if you have them, a notebook and a camera to document your observations wouild also be useful. However, the walk will be fully guided and the guides will have access to all of this equipment and plenty of information.

We hope to see you there!
