About this event

Sprinkle some eco-friendly fun into your summer holiday schedule with our events to engage and inspire the next generation.

Children, and their families, are welcomed into Chelmsford Cathedral to take part in a variety of fun activities, all aimed to help them learn how to enjoy - and take care of - the environment around them. If you know someone who loves Lego, they can come and get creative designing and building insects of all shapes and sizes. For crafty children, there’ll be junk-modelling and collage-creating in bug and bee friendly designs.

Ever heard of a vegetable orchestra? A note-worthy session will see the cathedral’s music team creating instruments from veggies, as well as all kinds of recycled materials, and learning how to make insect sounds. Sessions will run from July 23rd to August 27th, from 10am-12pm (or 12pm-12.45pm for Pipes and Popcorn).

After the huge success of our Popcorn and Pipes event last half-term, our assistant director of music, Sam Bristow, will be back at the organ again on Wednesday August 6th. This time, he’ll play eco-themed favourites like ‘A Whole New World’ and ‘Bare Necessities.’ There’ll be popcorn and juices for children to enjoy while they listen to the music. Please see separate event listing for this event.

Have you heard about Buzz in the City? Sculptures have sprung up all over Chelmsford, with one of the giant bees landing in the cathedral grounds, as part of the art trail organised by Farleigh Hospice.

"We have welcomed one of the wonderful bee sculptures for exhibition in our Churchyard, using this as a focus for a whole programme of summer events here at the Cathedral,” says chief operating officer Justine Horseman Sewell. “We are very proud to play a part in the community. We’ll be helping to raise funds for local hospice care, while also thinking about bees, biodiversity, food sourcing, our environment and the important part we all play in caring for our natural world in the coming months."
