York St John University, Bystander Programme DG/102

All students regardless of gender, sexuality and religion “are entitled to enjoy a safe and positive experience at university” (Universities UK, 2016, p. 1).

This training is being run as part of the Building Healthy Relationships project. York St John are working in partnership with York College, IDAS and Survive, to raise awareness about the importance of healthy relationships, by promoting consent, respect and responsibility in order to strengthen our prevention of sexual harassment and sexual violence. We are working with students, to deliver a variety of training, and to create some engaging awareness raising materials, all to promote the messages of the project!

If you would like to get involved in any more of our training, or find out more how to get involved in creating project material, please contact healhtyrelationships@yorksj.ac.uk

To find out more about the project, please visit our webpage on York St John website https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/search/?collection=yorksj-meta&tab=all&query=healthy+relationships+project

About the training:

  • Have you ever laughed at a joke you thought was inappropriate or cruel? Have you ever been concerned about a friend’s behaviour on a night out but not known how to help? You have been a bystander, and we are all bystanders to human behaviour all the time. It can be difficult to know how and when to intervene, and help your friends and peers.
  •  Sexual violence has been reported as a global issue, and university campuses have been identified as environments in which sexual violence is prevalent. Although sexual violence may occur in private there are usually numerous opportunities for others, bystanders, to intervene before an assault occurs.
  • The Intervention Initiative is a bystander programme which aims to empower you to become an active bystander, and be part of the solution in stopping and preventing sexual violence in your student community. The programme will be delivered by Nathalie Noret and Anna Macklin, Senior Lecturers in Psychology at YSJ.
  •  By attending the programme, you will develop a skill set which will enable you to notice the warning signs for sexual violence, techniques to help you intervene, and the importance of staying safe. Your knowledge and understanding of the law and penalties for different types of sexual violence will be enhanced. In addition, you will develop transferable graduate skills such as communication, empathy and team work. The sessions will be a mixture of discussions, case studies, videos and role play, to help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become active bystanders.
