Event description
Bystander Intervention Training - open to all YSJU students and staff

About this Event

Have you ever laughed at a joke you thought was inappropriate or cruel? Have you ever been concerned about a friend’s behaviour on a night out but not known how to deal with it? Have you ever wanted to challenge something but just weren't sure how?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have been a bystander. We are all bystanders to human behaviour all the time. It can be difficult to know how and when to intervene when we see problematic behaviour.

Harassment, sexual violence, abuse and hate crimes are global issues, and university campuses have been identified as environments in which such behaviour is prevalent. Although this behaviour may occur in private there are often numerous opportunities for others (bystanders) to intervene before an assault occurs.

The Intervention Initiative is a bystander programme which aims to empower you to become an active bystander, and be part of the solution in stopping and preventing harassment in your student community. The programme will be delivered by Nathalie Noret and Anna Macklin, Senior Lecturer`s in Psychology at YSJU and Hilary Conroy and Sarah Thompson, All About Respect Advisers.

By attending the programme, you will develop a skill set which will enable you to notice the warning signs for harassment and sexual violence, techniques to help you intervene, and the importance of staying safe.
