Climate Change Impacts and Mitigation in Transport: Addressing Decarbonisation of Transport
The transport sector is now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, and one of the largest worldwide; unlike energy and other sectors, it has seen increases rather than reductions in emissions worldwide, and no reductions in the UK. The UK Government has produced a Transport Decarbonisation Plan, which sets out pathways to zero emission vehicles, but there is a consensus that this will need to be accompanied by reductions in vehicle mileage. This is especially challenging for places outside cities, where alternatives to car use are less available. This symposium will look at the challenges of tackling emissions from transport and the opportunities to reduce them in areas outside cities. Many councils have declared a climate emergency but have found tackling transport difficult; this symposium will present practical ideas on ways forward, especially for those at local level. It will also focus on the importance of links between land use planning and transport as a means of tackling climate change.
