Description

Discover one of Cardiff’s most important, but little-known archaeological sites. Solve the clues in an interactive 'Escape' room before passing through to the ideas generation workshop.

The Caerau And Ely Rediscovering (CAER) Heritage Project is a collaborative project between Cardiff University, Action in Caerau and Ely (ACE), local schools and local residents. The project is based around one of Cardiff’s most important, but little-known, archaeological sites, Caerau Iron Age hillfort.

The Caer Heritage Project team need your help in developing their community and business plan to ensure that the project continues to help the people of Caerau and Ely, suburbs of Cardiff which face significant social and economic problems. The project is helping to revitalise the community and connect local people and school children with this site’s fascinating past and make it relevant to the present, and it's key objectives have been to put local people at the heart of cutting-edge archaeological research, to develop educational opportunities and to challenge stigmas and unfounded stereotypes ascribed to this part of Cardiff.

This event is made up of two parts over 2 hours. Firstly, solve the puzzles in the Iron Age 'Escape' room and then you can pass into the ideas workshop. Here you will work with other students from across the university to provide solutions and ideas to enhance the Caer Heritage’s offer to the local community and make a difference to the growth of this fascinating site. As well as being in with a chance of winning a Best Team prize, you’ll also get all the latest information about volunteering and dig opportunities and learn about an important site in local history.

The Caer Heritage project recently won the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community award at the Times Higher Education Awards 2017 and was overall winner of the National (UK) Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement ‘Engage Award’, 2014.

Cardiff University's School of History, Archaeology and Religion are an innovative and internationally recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching, devoted to the study of the past and beliefs from prehistoric times to contemporary societies.

This event is part of a week-long Student Innovation Festival - a celebration of the innovative and creative work taking place across the University, and has been co-produced and curated by a team of students working with our Schools and staff. This event is only open to staff and students of Cardiff University. Check out the other events taking place across campus during the festival week.
