Cafe Culturel & RSA Durham: Disability, Resilience, and Success
Mon 10 April 2017, 18:30 – 21:00 BST
Igniting ideas and connecting researchers, academics and other thinkers to thinking public communities.
Many disabled people achieve success in life in spite of the additional societal barriers they may face. Can this tell us something new about resilience?
There has been a backlash against what many are calling 'inspiration porn', meaning the use of disabled people as inspiring achievers. Tom Shakespeare, Professor of Disability Research at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, will ask how should we think about people who overcome the odds and achieve success? Tom will draw on international perspectives from his current research which explores the lives of successful disabled people in Africa.
Cafe Culturel is an informal, café-style, thoughtful public discussion. Events are open to all, no prior knowledge needed, just a like-minded desire for convivial and lively banter in an inclusive, welcoming setting.
Please register to attend this free event in advance.
If you have any questions, or to let us know of any access requirements or reasonable adjustments you have, contact Loraine Sweeney: Cafe Culture North East Coordinator: firstname.lastname@example.org or call 07733 246950.
We encourage you to arrive from 6.30pm to enjoy a drink and meet other attendees before the talk starts at 7pm. The speaker talks for around 30 minutes, followed by open discussion and debate, with a short break at 8pm to refill glasses; the discussion then resumes until 9pm. There will be an opportunity for networking after the talk.
The event is free to attend. Donations are welcome to help Cafe Culture North East continue their work.
Please note there is no parking directly outside the venue on Palace Green for participants. There are a limited number of spaces available for disabled parking. Anyone with a blue badge requiring disabled parking, email email@example.com with your name and registration number within 5 days of the event and we will confirm space availability.
