Event description

Description

The speaker will be Professor Averil Macdonald OBE, emeritus professor of science engagement at the University of Reading.

Everyone seems to think that electric cars are an excellent way to reduce pollution and our reliance on fossil fuels. But it's not that simple. Averil will explain the serious difficulties and threats that electric cars could bring, and consider the choices and life style changes that we will all have to adopt to move to a totally green electric world. She will also describe the huge technological challenges in generating and transmitting the electricity we will demand and the current research being undertaken to achieve this.

Professor Macdonald is a well-known figure in promoting women's role in the world of science. if you're interested, here's an article of hers that appears on the Telegraph about women's understanding of fracking:

Cafe Scientifique is a relaxed session for people wishing to find out more about science. It's not a lecture, more of a discussion and a way to answer some of the questions that you and I have about science. Anyone can come along and it is free to attend. We do pass a hat around to collect any contribution to help defray the costs, but it's optional.

The session on 26th September will start at 7.00 pm and dinner will be served from 5.30 pm.
You're welcome to eat and drink while the session is running, much like any informal gathering with friends in a cafe.

See you then!
