Title of lecture: 'Why is St Edmund’s church within the walls of Venta Icenorum?'

Summary: The talk will look at the late and post-Roman history of the town and examine in particular why the medieval church of St Edmund was built in the southeast corner of the walled town. It will look at the evidence for an early Christian church on the site and whether St Edmunds reflects the site of a Roman building. From this the talk will examine the status of Venta Icenorum in the post-Roman period and ask what the presence of the church tells us about the site in the early Middle Ages. THIS EVENT IS ONLY OPEN TO MEMBERS OF CAISTOR ROMAN PROJECT.
