CAKE 16

Music and Sound

Creative Fuse North East's 16th CAKE event will celebrate the creativity of musicians, sound artists and studios across the North East. Our speakers will show how traditional music practice is reaching new frontiers through electronic music, live coding and approaches to performance. The event will provide an insight into the innovative research in musicology, theory and analysis taking place at Durham University, whose music department is rated as top in the UK. In addition, our speakers will discuss Generator's work to develop creative talent and music education, considering both music research and music practise across the region. The event will also be an opportunity to preview an exciting new studio and cinema space embedded within the community in Newcastle.

Speakers:

Andy Haggerstone, Managing Director, Kaleidoscope

Andy Haggerstone is co-founder and managing director of Kaleidoscope, an artist management company and record label based in Newcastle upon Tyne, and partner in Blank Studios, a recording studio in Ouseburn Valley. The new studio space will be attached to the Star and Shadow Cinema, offering the opportunity to produce audio mixes and immediately test them within a cinema environment and allowing direct recording from the live venue space. Andy also recently submitted his PhD thesis on the evolution of creativity at University of York.

Sean Cotterill, Musician & Live Coder

Sean Cotterill is a digital artist, live coder, musician living and working in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, currently undertaking a PhD at Newcastle University focusing on developing a Free/Libre digital art practice. Sean's current projects include reverse-engineered live coded dance music as co¥ᄀpt, reconstructing blackwork embroidery for sampler/sampler, and disassembling the proprietary cyborg for howToNotDie.

Ged Robinson, Talent Development, Generator

Ged Robinson trained as a Jazz Drummer before spending 3 years working within Fine Art. After that he returned to music and has worked in live events and education at major festivals and venues including Sage Gateshead, London Jazz Festival, BB6 Music Festival, Liverpool Sound City and Sheffield’s Tramlines festival. As well as regular creative projects, Ged has spent the last 3 years working for Generator within the Talent Development team. As part of that role he has designed and delivered a series of innovative education pilots focused on connecting disadvantaged young artists to the music industry.
