Innovation in Content & Media
Creative Fuse North East invites you to our 26th CAKE (Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange) event, where we will explore themes of innovation and creativity in the content and media sector. This will be a chance for our speakers to tell us about their work and practice in screen-based media, identifying practical tips and sharing their experience of developing and producing compelling content.
The event will be delivered in partnership with Northern Film and Media (NFM) and Proto.
Northern Film and Media are a North East England creative industries development agency. NFM work with businesses and professionals specialising in film, TV and screen-based arts through their talent development projects, events and production service. NFM also support regional commercial film and television production and attract inward investment by promoting the region as a base for incoming film and TV production.
PROTO: The Emerging Technology Centre is a new space in the North East that can help you understand how technology can solve your business challenges, as well as offering a home for tech businesses and a research and development facility. Proto is also part of the Digital Catapult North East Tees Valley.
Following the event there will be the chance to visit Digital Catapult North East Tees Valley Immersive Lab, where you can experience new perspectives through AR, VR and mixed-reality latest tools and techniques.
Speakers:
Samm Haillay, Producer, Third Films
Samm Haillay founded Third with Duane Hopkins in 2001. He produced Hopkins’ multi-award winning short films and subsequent feature debut Better Things, which premiered to critical acclaim at International Critics Week, Cannes in 2008. Samm also produced Hopkins’ multi-channel film installations series Sunday and Hopkins’ sophomore feature Bypass that premiered at Venice Film Festival in 2014. On top of a muscular development slate of feature films and TV drama Samm’s short film productions have won over 45 awards including: Berlin, Venice, Edinburgh, and Chicago. Samm is also an Associate Senior Lecturer in Film Production at Teesside University.
Marc de Launay, Executive Producer, Arcus Animation Studios
Marc de Launay is an innovative, award winning Business Executive, Director, Writer and Producer working within the creative arts and digital sectors. As a theatre and film director, Marc was winner of the “Deffies” Best Director Award in 2009 and was nominated for BAFTA Best Director New Talent Award 2010 and BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum in 2011. He worked across a range of high profile projects from the planning stage through to implementation and completion. Marc has an outstanding track record of providing advice for strategic business development, financial governance and IP development for original and joint ventures, as well as offering start-up advice and support for a wide range of digital and creative companies.
Jenny Lang, Programme Engagement Manager, Digital Catapult NETV, Sunderland Software City
Jenny Lang leads engagement activity on behalf of Digital Catapult North East & Tees Valley (NETV), which enables collaborations between the North East ecosystem of emerging technology companies and wider enterprises, driving new products to market and facilitating commercial opportunities for SMEs. Jenny is responsible for activity and day-to-day management of the NETV Immersive Lab at PROTO, leading a state-of-the-art facility designed to educate the market on the potential immersive has to transform industry, as well as fostering the growth of immersive companies to encourage and support the UK’s growing immersive community in developing commercially viable immersive content and applications.
Getting there:
PROTO is amongst the newest additions to the Gateshead skyline, and has quickly become a hub of creativity and design for the North East region. PROTO is the first centre in Europe built specifically to support emerging technologies such as VR and augmented reality (AR), as well as being a space for tech startups and an R&D facility.
The venue is located centrally within Gateshead, near local bus and metro connections, as well as being within easy walking distance of Newcastle Quayside.
Ample parking is available in the car park directly outside the building.

CAKE (Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange) is Creative Fuse North East's monthly networking event, bringing together businesses, freelancers, academics, charities and creative practitioners from across the Creative, Digital and IT sectors. Each themed CAKE event has expert speakers delivering short presentations that explore opportunities and innovation challenges. The events generate debate, explorative discussion and stimulate new innovative ideas by looking at each event’s theme from a variety of different perspectives – in keeping with the event name, attendees enjoy a slice of delicious cake while they network.
